Looks like the maharaj had the old city of Jaipur painted pink (actually it's more like a blushed terra cotta) to welcome the future King of England about a 100 years ago. Pink being the color of welcome. Personally, I think the "house" they built for his visit is way more astonishing, but Jaipur is probably known more for the fact that every single building in the old city is this color. This particular building, the Hawa Mahal, is nothing more than a facade used by the maharaj's harem to be able to see the comings and goings of street life in Jaipur.
